The Thompson 1/4 in detail gouge is the tool you reach for when precision matters most. Made from CPM-10V powder metal steel — hardened to 62–64 Rockwell and triple tempered with a cryogenic treatment — it holds its edge far longer than high-speed steel alternatives, so you spend more time turning and less time back at the grinder.
The narrow 1/4 in profile and its tight-winged grind let you work in spaces a standard bowl gouge simply cannot reach: tight coves, the inside of hollow forms, the foot of a vase, and fine detail on spindle work. It cuts cleanly rather than scraping, which means less sanding and a truer surface.
The 10mm shank is compatible with the Simon Hope handle system — both grub screw and quick release — so it slots straight into the handle you already use.
Each tool is handcrafted in a 13-step process by Thompson Lathe Tools in the USA. This is not a production-line tool. If you're serious about your woodturning, the difference in edge retention and cut quality is something you'll notice on the very first use.
